Reading and Phonics
Temple uses The Oxford Reading Tree as its reading scheme, but we aim to ensure that our children have full access to a range of text styles and genres to develop their understanding of the range of reading matter that everyday life presents us with. Each Phase has a library which is well resourced with fiction and non-fiction texts.
Reading is valued throughout the school and reading opportunities are planned in all subject areas, including Creative Curriculum topics.
We provide our children with the skills, knowledge and understanding required to read and gain meaning from this range of reading material as well as develop an enthusiasm for reading for pleasure and the technical skills required to decode print.
The Letters and Sounds phonic scheme is used as the main teaching programme for phonics, supplemented by Ruth Miskin’s Speed Sounds.
Reading targets are addressed through guided reading sessions to raise attainment in reading throughout the school. Children also take home a graded reading log to share with someone at home. Regular workshops to promote reading at home are led by staff in the EYFS and KS1. We also have strong links with the local library service.
